FRED STUHR

FREDERICK VIOHL STUHR
AQUAS Director

Born in Charleston, S.C on july 15, 1937 to Harry and Lorene Stuhr. Educated in the public schools of Charleston, graduating in June 1955 from the High School of Charleston. Attended Boys State. Lettered in football, basketball and swimming. Graduated from The Citadel in June 1959 with a BS in EE. Cadet Platoon Leader. Swim Team Captain and Southern Conference 100 yard backstroke champion in 1958.

Served 3 years active duty as a USAF Lieutenant at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, N.M., working in special weapons development and test. Honorably discharged in August 1962.

Civilian professional career of 41 years with NASA/Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA. Earned an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1965 while on leave of absence. Initial 16 years at JPL in telecommunication systems and antennas for un-manned deep space missions. This included Mariner planetary fly-bys, Viking Mars landings & Voyager fly-bys of outer planets. 8 years in military communications, including ASAS Project for Army intelligence assessment capability. Final 14 years at JPL in radar remote sensing systems. This included SEASAT oceanographic radar, Shuttle radar imaging & topographic mapping of Earth, Venus radar mapping, Earth ocean scatterometers, Mars landing radars and Cassini radar mapping of Saturn. Received the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal in 1995 for contributions to the SIR-C/X-SAR Project and in 2001 for the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM). Retired from JPL in February 2004 as Deputy Manager of the Radar Science and Engineering Section.

Initially married to Deanne Treichler from June 1965 until divorce in February 1987. Two children: Frederick II and Karen. Fred II was killed in an auto accident in October 1997 at age 30. A grandson, Griffin, was born to Fred and Holly October 15,1992.
Married Sarah Legare of Charleston in June 1992. Two step-daughters – Charlotte and Caroline Padgett. Charlotte is married to Adam Edwards with grand-son Legare, born Feb 16, 2007. Caroline is married to Ananda Millls and lives in Ashville, NC.

Volunteer over last 4 years with Charleston Community in Schools, whose mission is to reduce dropout rates and support student educational success. Mentored and tutored math at St. Johns High School.
