San Antonio, Texas – May 17, 2014 – The San Antonio Stars of the WNBA have partnered with AQUAS to help young scholar-‐athletes get into college and earn their degree.
AQUAS (Assistance for Qualified Undergraduate Athletic Students) is a 501 (c)(3) non-‐profit organization that identifies underserved high school athletes who have demonstrated that, aside from their athletic skills, they have excelled in their academic pursuits and are giving back to their community as volunteers. Once a student-‐ athlete is accepted into the AQUAS program, profiles and videos are developed and then distributed to college coaches throughout the U.S. Subsequently when an academic and athletic match has been realized, the student and family can expect financial support from
the gaining university. In addition, personal guidance is provided to each student regarding the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA systems and the steps necessary in the recruitment process to maximize their eligibility for academic/athletic scholarships.
The San Antonio Stars of the WNBA are one of four professional sport franchises owned and operated by Spurs Sports and Entertainment (SS&E) – the San Antonio Spurs (NBA), the Rampage (AHL) and the Austin Toros (NBA Development League) – and play their home games at the SS&E operated AT&T Center. The 2014 season will mark the team’s 12th year in San Antonio as the Utah Starzz relocated to the Alamo City in 2003. In operation since 1997, the WNBA – which features 12 teams – is the most successful women’s professional team sports league in the world.
On June 7th at 7 pm when the San Antonio Stars host the Phoenix Mercury, AQUAS will be the non-‐profit organization featured in the theme, “Stars Shine for a Cause.”
*Portions of tickets purchased through AQUAS will be donated to support students with the education they deserve*
