San Antonio, Texas – April 24, 2014 – Karagan Day, a senior volleyball player from Bracken Christian High School, has committed to play her sport next year at Sewanee, The University of the South. Karagan plans to be a Pre-Med major as she hopes to enter the medical field for her career following graduation from Sewanee. Known familiarly as “Sewanee” by its students, faculty, staff and friends, The University of the South offers an unmatched educational experience. With an undergraduate enrollment of 1500 students, Sewanee boasts 26 Rhodes Scholars amongst its graduates over the years.

The university remains purposefully small and dedicated to building a sense of community. All classes are taught by professors, not graduate teaching assistants, and close faculty-student interaction ensures that each student enjoys a rich and personal educational experience. The college is located on a 13,000-acre tract of land between Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Athletically the Sewanee Tigers compete in the Southern Athletic Association.

Since Sewanee is an NCAA Division III college no athletic scholarships are awarded. However, due to Karagan’s exceptional academic performance at Bracken Christian she received significant scholarship awards from Sewanee. Earlier Karagan was selected as an AQUAS scholar-athlete and the CEO of AQUAS, COL Hugh Mulligan, commented that Karagan’s very high score on the ACT exam along with her outstanding volleyball skills resulted in 45 colleges showing an interest in her. Karagan is excited about going to Sewanee and will be reporting there as an athlete on August 17, 2014. With her academics rating as a priority and her passion and dedication to play volleyball for Head Coach Shawna Laurendine, Karagan also plans to immerse herself in other activities at her college. AQUAS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that is identifying underserved high school athletes who have demonstrated high academic performance. These students may not have received much national visibility for a number of reasons; thus college coaches are not aware of their skills. AQUAS overcomes that problem as it puts these selected students in front of collegiate athletic departments until the right academic and athletic matches are found.
