Charleston, SC – June 16, 2014 – The Assistance for Qualified Undergraduate Athletic Students (AQUAS) is pleased to announce that Fred Stuhr has agreed to serve on the AQUAS Board of Directors and help direct the establishment of this charity in the area. Fred is a native Charlestonian whose family has been in the funeral business in Charleston since 1865. He was educated in the public schools of Charleston and graduated from the High School of Charleston in 1955. In high school Fred lettered in football, basketball and swimming. He went on to
enroll at The Citadel, where he was a Cadet Platoon Leader, Swim Team Captain and was the Southern Conference backstroke champion in 1958. Graduating from The Citadel with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he went on to serve three years in the Air Force as a lieutenant in special weapons development and test.
Fred’s civilian career was with NASA/Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. He took a leave of absence and went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. He retired from NASA as Deputy Manager of the Radar Science and Engineering Section in 2004 and returned home to Charleston, where he now resides on Wadmalaw Island.
For the last four years Fred has served as a volunteer with the Charleston Community in Schools program, which has as its mission both reducing the dropout rate and supporting
educational success. He has served as a math tutor and mentor at St. John’s High School, which has a heavily minority and low- income student body.
AQUAS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency registered in the State of South Carolina. Its mission is to identify undeserved high school students who have demonstrated high academic performance and have been playing a sport at the varsity level. The AQUAS scholar-athletes may not have received much national visibility for a number of reasons; consequently college coaches are not aware of their skills. AQUAS overcomes that problem as it puts these
selected students in front of collegiate athletic departments throughout the nation until the right academic and athletic match has been found. There is no charge for this service.
COL Hugh F. Mulligan, CEO of AQUAS, commented, “We are so excited that Fred Stuhr has agreed to join our team as we expand into the tri-county area. He knows Charleston and the Low Country and its people; he knows the school system; he appreciates the need for higher education; and, most importantly, he shares the passion for helping students who didn’t believe there was any way to get to college, thereby realizing their dream. Fred is not a person who stands around and watches, Mulligan said, but a man of action. He was a leader at The Citadel and his determination to find and help the scholar-athletes in Charleston are on his agenda.”
