San Antonio, Texas – July 29, 2013 – Kylar Flowers, a senior softball player from San Antonio’s Douglas MacArthur High School has been selected as an AQUAS (Assistance for Qualified Undergraduate Athletic Students) scholar-athlete.  Kylar will be graduating in the spring of 2014 and plans to enter college to major in education.  With a continuing interest in helping young children, her goal is to become an elementary school teacher.AQUAS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that is identifying underserved high school athletes who have demonstrated high academic performance.  These students may not have received much national visibility for a number of reasons; thus college coaches are not aware of their skills.  AQUAS overcomes that problem as it puts these selected students in front of the colleges’ athletic departments until the right academic and athletic matches are found.

Kylar began her softball playing days when, at age 10, she played for a McAllister Park Little League All-Star team that finished third in their state tournament. During that experience she fell in love with the game, becoming the versatile player that she is today. Kylar’s primary position is third base but she also excels as a catcher and has even pitched. Although a great defensive player this young lady is a formidable threat when she comes to bat. Kylar led the City of San Antonio in home runs during her junior year and batted at a .493 clip. She attempted 21 stolen bases during the 2013 season and was only caught three times.

Kylar is not only an athlete but also a very talented musician. During her first three years in high school she was a clarinetist in the Brahma Marching Band. In addition, Kylar is a member of the symphonic orchestra at her high school.

With an SAT score of 1670, Kylar will be a sought-after talent at colleges throughout the country.

Paul Arguijo, head coach of the Texas Challengers Gold, Kylar’s club team, stated, “Kylar is every coach’s dream. She is so coachable, listens to direction and then executes. She demonstrates her leadership qualities all the time and has gained the respect of her teammates, our coaching staff and even her opponents. She possesses the athletic skills to play at the collegiate level; but, most importantly, she continually demonstrates the integrity and work ethics to attain the goals which she has set for herself.”

Lorena Contreras, the Chair of the AQUAS Selection Committee, said, “This is another example of the quality young people who are working so hard to make a future life not only for themselves but also for their loved ones.  This is what Kylar Flowers is all about!”
